J.D. Takes Grand Prize!

"Sea of Red" - J.D. Wacker's Prize Winning Image

The Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Summer Shootout winners were chosen, and "Sea of Red" an image by J.D. Wacker of Photography by J.D. of Clintonville won frist place in the open category and was selected for the Grand Prize! J.D.'s image was selected by world-class judges as the best image in the competition from over 2000 entries. The competition was open July through September only to professional photographers who are PPA members. Entries came from the best photographers on the planet. J.D. will receive a total of $1750 prize money ($750 for his first place award, plus $1000 for the grand prize) at the PPA IUSA international convention in San Antonio, Texas in January.

Although J.D. is known best for his portraiture and commercial imaging, he and his father Dave and now son David all enjoy covering area sporting events. J.D. worked as a photojounalist while still in high school. He photographed for regional newspapers and a few national magazines as well as working with his parents in the family photography business which dates back to 1906. Also, J.D. has photographed many area sports teams and other school groups for over twenty-seven years.

"Sea of Red" is an image J.D. captured during the University of Wisconsin Badgers football game versus the San Jose State Spartans September 11th. In the image, Wisconsin Cornerback, Niles Brinkley (29) breaks up a pass intended for SJSU Receiver, Noel Grigsby (23). J.D. selected this image from a series of images he captured of the play where the receiver actually landed on his head. J.D. says that he chose this image because "It demonstrated slightly better composition and because of the contrast of the blue receiver "swimming" through a sea of red fans." The judges must have agreed.

The coveted SPI Senior Photographer of the Year TrophyWORLD CHAMPIONS!

Photography by J.D. Photographers, Dave & J.D. Wacker,

Win 2010 International Senior Photographer of the Year Award!

January 7, 2010- Captiva Island, Florida

The Senior Photographers International held their annual convention and high school senior folio competition in Florida at the South Seas Resort, January 5-8, 2010.

At the awards ceremony, two, Clintonville, WI. photographers did what no photographers in the history of SPI had ever done. They tied in total score for the highest award, The SPI H.S. Senior Photographer of the Year. After a discussion by the panel of judges, it was decided that the photographers would jointly share the honor. Even more surprising was the fact that the two Photographers were from the same studio! Father and son, J.D. and Dave Wacker, of Photography by JD in Clintonville, WI were presented the trophy jointly.

The large crystal trophy features a world globe in the center. This honors the range of international competitors. Although international, the majority of the competitors were from the US, Canada, Mexico and Central America.

To enter, the photographer must be a professional photographer specializing in photographing high school seniors. An eight image folio of a girl and an eight image folio of a boy mounted in presentation folios must be presented for judging by a panel of judges. Each judge scores the folio from 1 to 100. The total scores of all judges on both folios by one photographer determines the overall winner. The photographer with the highest total is declared the Best Photographer of High School Seniors in the World.  J.D. and Dave’s scores were identical and brought the title back to Clintonville, WI.

The subjects were all area high school students: Megan Zarneke from New London, Leah Kappelman from Marion, Emanuele Badalamenti from Shawano and Thiago Braga from Shawano.

The trophy and the winning folios will be on display at various local businesses starting with Luigi's in Shawano and finally at Photography by J.D.  A Wisconsin celebration will be held at Curly's Pub in Lambeau Field, February 20th, for the winning subjects, friends, and winning photographers.

Trophy goes on tour!
